The Vampire Shrink is a book that I've wanted to read for a long time, and now that I read it, I'm feeling underwhelmed. I loved the idea of a psychologist who specializes in people who believe they are vampires, or who are looking to become vampires, then actually meeting a real vampire and questioning everything she ever knows. Which is basically what happens to Kismet when the master of the local vampire coven comes to see her after learning that one of the vampire-hopefuls has been to see her.

I did really like The Vampire Shrink in the beginning. It was really interesting to see a character viewing vampires from an academic, mental health perspective. It's definitely not something I had read before. Even after coming face to face with Devereux and witnessing some of his abilities, Kismet isn't sold on the idea of vampires. Of course, she has to start believing sometime or things would be needlessly drawn out and repetitive. It takes an FBI agent who's been on a case involving dozens of bodies drained of blood to make her believe though.

While the focus is on the murder plot, The Vampire Shrink does have a romance. I'm not really invested in it, but I did really like how it was handled. There's not a love triangle (yet), but Kismet is sleeping with both Devereux and Alan. And they know about each other! But no one is forcing her to choose, and she's not agonizing over who to choose. She's just doing her thing, and that's awesome! I don't think I'll be continuing the series, but if I was, I'd be hoping this ends in a triad. One man for the day, and one for the night!

Like I said, I enjoyed The Vampire Shrink in the beginning, but then it kind of plateaus, then drops off. I just really didn't care about this investigation much. And I was really annoyed by the amount of times this woman forgets to lock her door, allowing any and all weirdos to just walk in and wreak havoc! Another thing that really bothered me was the focus on skin, particularly pale skin. Kismet is constantly bringing up how pale she is (not in a complaining way), and how she's fascinated by Devereux's skin which is much lighter than hers. And translucency is sexy! And being fair skinned is a blessing. Yep, you read that right. That actually made me cringe.

The Vampire Shrink was an okay read. It had some great ideas that I was excited to see play out, but ultimately it just fell flat.

After finishing The Vampire Shrink, I'm left with mixed emotions about this book. I like the whole concept because it's a bit different. However, I felt the main characters (especially the character of Devereux) didn't evolve through the story enough.

The second book is available, but I haven't read it yet. It's possible that Dev is more hashed out in the second book. I hope that's the case, because I couldn't really connect with him in this book. I felt more connected to the hunky FBI agent, Alan.

Kismet is somewhat confusing. She stayed in denial way too long about the existence of vampires even when it was staring her right in the face...literally (Bryce lol). I liked her well enough though. She has three potential love interests in this book--Tom (her ex), Alan (FBI agent), and Dev (800 year old vamp). Yeah, I was rooting for Alan because I felt more connected to him than Dev. I shouldn't even really count Tom because he's an egotistical ass.

Overall, I did like the story and will read the next book, Blood Therapy. I think this story was well deserving of 3.5 stars, but I'd give the cover art 2 stars. I just didn't care for it.
The main character in this series, Kismet Knight, finds herself working with a new young client, who claims to be a Vampire. I won't ruin your reading by confirming or denying her claim, but let's just say there's definitely real Vampires in this one.
Kismet, while dealing with her own psychological issues, finds herself counselling Vampires, while trying to ensure she doesn't become dinner for any of them. Like all the good heroines that we are finally reading about, she is tough but fragile, funny and self-aware and gives out a few hints of her own mystical powers that I hope we will discover in future books.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book but I did find myself getting a little annoyed at Kismet. At times she reminded me of a boy-crazy teenager but I'm hoping the author did that deliberately and that we find out why in another book.
Looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Well, this was a hoot! Vampires going to a shrink? Of course, the shrink thinks they are actually humans who have some major "issues" they deny. The shrink, Kismet Knight, knows vampires do not exist. Her denial regarding vampires brings near death experiences along with a gorgeous and powerful vampire, Devereaux, who believes she is his mate. And that is just the beginning of the story. Lynda Kilburn, author and psychotherapist, takes the whole paranormal genre and tips it on its head. Using humor, action, police, psychics, vampires, a ghost and other evil dimension dwellers, Ms. Kilburn creates an entertaining and enticing and scary world. What a fun read.
