This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Witching Hour Augustus Thomas Books

The play "The Witching Hour" by Augustus Thomas opened on Broadway in November 1907 at the Hackett Theatre and ran for 212 performances. John Mason who had run on Broadway several years earlier in "Leah Kleschna" played the lead Jack Brookfield. We learn that Brookfield's niece Viola Campbell is in love with young Clay, although lawyer Hardmuth would like to neutralize his rival to seek Viola's hand.

As the first act unfolds at Brookfield's estate, a gaming dispute escalates. Young Clay Whipple picks up a cat's eye pin and fatally stabs Tom Denning. The second act unfolds as the Whipple trial comes to dominate the news. Hard-nosed politician Frank Hardmuth sees an opportunity to advance his bid for the Governor of Kentucky. He also tries to discredit young Whipple to advance his romantic chances with Viola.

As events unfold, the play explores paranormal abilities of mind control. We learn that Jack Brookfield can know the cards in another's hand and can even influence the minds of members of a jury miles away. Jack knows that Hardmuth is unethical because he has read his mind and therefore opposes him as the choice for his niece to marry. Brookfield battles Hardmuth by reading his mind and running a story in his paper that Hardmuth had planned an assassination. While true, it is impossible for Brookfield to have known about it other than through telepathy. The play climaxes with the resolution of the Whipple trial and a renegade Hardmuth pulling a gun on Brookfield.

Almost a hundred years later, interest in the paranormal continues to intrigue audiences. One might ask questions like how Jack developed his abilities and the ethics involved in having this type of superior power. But "The Witching Hour" is an effective dramatic play which might lurch uncomfortably toward melodrama in an unskilled hand. However, it equally might still be revived as an early example of the exploration of this theme in the American theatre. Enjoy!

Note: I assume that this is the 1908 publication of Thomas' play, but it should be longer than the listed 3 pages.
